NO Yellow Cab – We have Safari buses. What would be considered a taxi on St John would be a “safari truck” (a multi-person, open-air truck that people climb into the back bed to ride). The amount or type of baggage you have may be limited.

Carry CASH. Small bills mean you don’t have to wait in line as the taxi driver tries to make change for every customer. CASH MAY BE THE ONLY FORM OF PAYMENT. In fact, it’s HIGHLY UNLIKELY there is any electronic form of payment, unless perhaps you discuss if this is an option with the driver prior to arranging your ride.
There is no regular taxi service between the beaches and the villa neighborhoods. Guests may have difficulty getting a safari truck to pick up at their villa location or could be waiting a long time for that safari truck to arrive by calling on demand. If you don’t have a rental car, it is a good idea to arrange for ride service in advance. We have a list of Taxi Drivers to call listed below.
Taxis on St John are more than happy to transport travelers to beaches such as Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Caneel Bay, Maho Bay, Honeymoon Beach, Oppenheimer Beach, and others located on the North Shore Road, the main road for the white sandy beaches. Be aware, many taxis on St John stop that route by 5pm. Rates for taxis on St John can be found in the next section below.
Local taxi rates and information can be found here.
So, the Dollar Bus … The dollar bus goes from Cruz Bay at the Ferry terminal to Coral Bay passed Salt Pond. The dollar bus is a small bus, goes only to a few stops, does no go on North Shore where the main beaches are, is a long hour and a half ride from one side of the island to another, and is known not to be the first choice in reliable, convenient transportation. Do not plan your trip to St John around this bus. You could be waiting, and waiting, and waiting – Maybe not because it is running late – Perhaps because it just isn’t fast at all or convenient.
An increasingly popular choice on island is the Windmill Bar. And for good reason! There is an amazing view, great happy hour drinks, relaxing vibe and often live music. There is a regular shuttle from Cruz Bay St John to take travelers on foot to the Windmill Bar. A great way to spend time on island, especially if you are coming to the island for just the day.
If you have a group that would like to take a guided tour on the island of St John, we’ve listed a few tour operators that would be happy show you around.
